HM Submarine C33 was sunk in the North Sea off Great Yarmouth on 4th August, 1915, (the date given by the Commonwealth Graves Commission is 5th August). At the time she was being used  as a bait to trap German U-boats. This involved being towed behind  a trawler and on a U-boat being sighted slipping the tow and attacking it. This she did on the evening of 4th August when she parted from her tow,  the armed trawler Malta, but neither HM Submarine C33 nor any of her crew of 17 were ever seen again and no wreckage was found. The Germans did not claimed a ‘kill’ and it was assumed that she had hit a mine.
